Fires in Istanbul

The fires of Istanbul, reaching back 300 thousand years ago, were unlike tragedies in the world. History gave the fires of Istanbul the name of dragon which surrounded the city. This dragon was not only seven-headed but also twenty seven-headed dragon spreading fire. At some times this dragon destroyed the half of Istanbul city and left thousands of people in wreckage.

Fire for Istanbul was a disaster. Fire was a terrible catastrophe devastating the city as well as natural disasters like earthquake and flood. This disaster, which sometimes put the beautiful city into wreckage, did not only harm the welfare and wealth of the citizens but at the same time damaged their ease and happiness. Almost all the people of Istanbul were not sure that the houses they had built would not turn into a pile of ash. It shouldn’t have been bet that a citizen who went to work in the morning would not find their house or street beaten by red flame waves and put into wreckage in a pile of stones and mud by these flames. For this reason if a citizen was to be far from his/her district or town, his/her heart was always beating with worries and the fear of fire almost invaded the whole city of Istanbul. The houses’ being made of wood and their lining so closely to each other on streets, the narrowness of the streets, and the lack of water and extinguishing agents resulted in the houses’ burning to the ground almost across the city. In spite of this, after the fire disaster, re-wooden building was permitted on the scene as well as it was not seen any harm that the roads and streets of the city were still in their existing state - in other words, narrow and tangled. The district or town newly established on that fire scene in ten or fifteen years was not much different from the previous one and underwent the same disaster and even it got exposed much more to that devastating event.

First period fires…The lack of water pumpers as known as “Tulumbacılar”. The period till 1714

1554	The fire having broken out in 1554 destroyed the area from Ayasofya to Tahtakale. The fire in 1555 devastated much of Galata.

1639	The flames having broken out at a candle manufacturing shop outside Balatkapı and spread to Suriçi soon burned down the Balat district till morning. The fire reached Çukurbostan and damaged the area between Fener kapısı and Çukurbostan.

The fires belonging janissary water pumpers (Yeniçeri tulumbacıları) period 1714– 1826
This second period went on till the abolishment of the guild of janissaries in 1826. The historians recorded that 44 great fires had happened and in these fires 7000 buildings, inns, Turkish baths and madrasas had burned. In this period, firefighting was initiated. Even some fires were extinguished immediately.

26.06.1972	Beyoğlu İstiklal Road Balo street – As a result of a butane explosion in a building , the rear sides of the second and third floor partly collapsed. 4 people died and 21 people were injured.
07.10.1972	Yedikule, Yedikule Road - 4 houses partly burned.
15.12.1972	Cağaloğlu Hükümet Konağı street -İstanbul City Financial Office – the upper floors and roof of the building burned.
23.12 1972	Rumelihisarı Durmuşdede street - 1 church and 3 houses completely, 4 house partly burned. The fire of one house was extinguished at the beginning stage. 1 person lost his/her life.
1974	Kasımpaşa Pişmaniye Street – a blaze broke out and 9 streets completely burned.
1982	Çarşılı Commercial building – In the blaze, 310 clothing stores burned.
1983	Laleli Washington Hotel – In the fire, 36 people died and 59 people were injured.
1991	Şehzadebaşı - A fire broke out in a coach and 3 people died.

03.10.1991	Beyoğlu İstiklal Road - The 17th and 18th floors of a business center completely burned.
25.12.1991	Bakırköy Cevizlik Neighbourhood, 11 people died and 19 people were injured in a large shop fire.
25.01.1992	1 person died and 5 people were injured as a result of an explosion in Grand Bazaar.
20.02.1992	1 person died and 18 people were injured in the explosion in Istanbul Chamber of Commerce, Eminönü.
17.03.1992	3 people died and 22 people were injured in the explosion in Gayrettepe, Beşiktaş.
05.04.1992	4 people died and 8 people were injured because of a building collapse in Yenişehir, Dolapdere.
16.05.1992	Many shops at Galata Bridge, Eminönü burned.
16.06.1992	Vaniköy villas completely burned in Vaniköy, Üsküdar.
28.08.1992	Pendik passenger ship burned at Karaköy Pier.
23.09.1992	Sarayburnu passenger ship burned at Eminönü Pier.
15.12.1992	In the fire which broke out on Fatih Haydar Ömer Paşa Road, 4 people died and 1 person was injured.
12.01.1993	35 shops completely burned in Topkapı open-air market.
18.02.1993	In the fire which occurred in Ortaköy, 1 person died and 1 person was injured.
28.04.1993	In the explosion which occurred in the garbage dump area in Kazım Karabekir Neighbourhood Ümraniye, 27 people lost their lives.
14.09.1993	A factory completely burned in Haramidere, Avcılar.
22.09.1993	All shops in Tahtakale Sabuncu, Küçük Yıldız, Gürün commercial buildings burned and 1 person was injured.
14.12.1993	A fabric warehouse in Kocasinan burned.
07.01.1994	3 people died in the fire in Talatpaşa, Okmeydanı.
06.02.1994	A fire broke out and all the shops in a commercial building on İstiklal Road, Beyoğlu burned. 4 people died and 1 person was injured.
13.03.1994	Two tankers called Nassia and Ship Broker collided in Bosphorus and many people died in the fire caused by the collision. More than 10.000 tons of oil which spread on the sea burned for days.
13.06.1994	In the fire on Şişli Halaskargazi Road, a clothing shop completely burned.
23.06.1994	In the fire which broke on Mercan Uzun Çarşı Road, a lot of shops burned.
29.01.1995	As a result of the fire which occurred in Levent Levazım Subaylar Building Complex, 2 people died.
07.08.1996	A chemistry factory burned in Dilovası, Gebze.
31.08.1996	A factory burned in Davutpaşa, Topkapı.
17.11.1996	17 foreign nationals died in the fire in a hotel in Laleli.
13.02.1997	In the fire at a tanker in Tuzla, 2 people died and 18 people was injured.
05.02.1999	In the fire in a retirement home in Maltepe, 9 people died and 5 people were injured.
23.02.1999	A truck carrying gas cylinders burned.
13.03.1999	12 people died and 3 people were injured in the fire in Göztepe Mavi Çarşı.
29.08.1999	Many shops burned in Salı Pazarı Commercial Centre fairground .
27.09.1999	5 people died and 9 people were injured in the fire in a chemistry factory in Kurtköy, Pendik.
29.03.2000	1 person died and 2 people were injured in the fire in a shop on Ortaklar Road in Mecidiyeköy, Şişli.
04.04.2000	A newspaper warehouse completely burned in the fire in Güneşli.
20.04.2000	The fire in Beylükdüzü damaged all the rooms of a hospital.
31.05.2000	4 people were injured in the fire in British Consulate in Beyoğlu.
28.07.2000	A factory completely burned in the fire in Topkapı.
13.07.2000	A factory completely burned in the fire in Avcılar.
22.11.2000	A fire occurred in a cosmetics factory Çerkezköy Organized Industrial Site. 2 people died and 5 people were injured. The fire resulted in great damage to the factory.
13.11.2000	1 person was injured in the fire in a glassware warehouse in Samandıra, Kartal.
06.12.2000	A fire occurred in a Ramadan tent in Eyüp and it made the tent unusable.
