The service of life–saving on Istanbul beaches, which was initiated in on Şile beach in the summer time of 2005 for the first time, was presented with 158 watch–towers, 362 lifeguards, 28 jet-skis, 6 zodiac boats and 11 ATVs on the 39300 meter–coast in 2012 under the coordination of Istanbul Fire Brigade. 18.093 people were saved from 2005 to 2012 via this lifesaving service on the beaches of Istanbul.
Rescue services at beaches have started. 336 people drowned only on Şile beaches from 1994 to 2004. Since 2005, the Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality has carried out emergency health service and life-guard service at Istanbul beaches and prevented people from drowning by attending incidents in which first five minutes of intervention are very essential and life-saving indeed. The Istanbul Fire Brigade handled life-guard service at Istanbul beaches first in the summer of 2005. In 2013, the Fire Brigade maintains life-guarding with 411 life-guards, 30 jet skis, 7 zodiac boats, 13 ATVs and 179 watchtowers on the coastline of 44.5 km. 18093 people were rescued from drowning between 2005 and 2012. Within the scope of this service, also ambulances give medical support & transportation to drowning people and to ones who fall sick suddenly at beaches.
