Eartquakes, landslides, floods and especially fires and other fire & rescue-related incidents in Istanbul have caused life losses, injuries and financial losses and other unrecoverable losses which lead to damages to our national wealth, wellfare and culturel, historical and natural heritages. 43.543 incidents occurred just in İstanbul in 2011, 26.444 of that are fires. As results of these incidents, 147 people died and 704 people were injured. Also they cost millions of liras for damages.
Istanbul Fire Brigade carries out three main activities against these dangers which threaten the welfare of the city and affecting negatively the vision of Istanbul being a “ high quality of life” city. These are as follows:
1) Training and awareness raising
2) Prevention and supervision
3) Firefighting and responding to fire & rescue-related incidents
At this point, the citizens’ levels of knowledge, skill and awareness have importance in the city’s fighting against disasters and fires as well as the capacity of the fire department and its prevention actions do. It is vital in minimising the life losses and material damages caused by fires that people should know how to take correct actions and be able to put their knowledge into practice in case of a fire in which seconds are of gret value.
