Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality (IMM) Fire Department does not intervene only in disasters such as fire, earthquake, flood, landslide and being stranded. It also reaches the rescue of the animals that are in a difficult situation in the most remote places of the city.
In 2018, 17 thousand 682 successful animal rescue operations in the first four months of 2019 were realised by the Fire Department and 3 thousand 900 animals were saved.
MOSTLY CATS, BIRDS AND DOGS ARE RESCUED
Firefighters rescued mostly cats and birds. In 2018, 13 thousand 370, in January - April of 2019, 2 thousand 805 cats were saved. Rescue operations were generally performed for cats who could not climb up and down the roof or tree, or entered vehicle engines.
3 thousand 207 in 2018, 786 birds in the first 4 months of 2019 were rescued from the trapped positions. A significant portion of the rescued birds consisted of seagulls falling in the apartment space and birds trapped in the fences.
People's friendly pet dogs took the third place in animal rescue operations. In 2018, 1003 dogs were rescued in Istanbul and 270 dogs were rescued in 2019.
There are also cows, horses and iguans on the rescue list.
Istanbul Fire Department rescued not only cats, dogs and birds, but also cows and horses. Among the animals saved by the fire brigade, iguana and eagle were rare species in the city life.
Last year, 65 cows, 17 horses, 11 goats, 9 sheep and 30 cows, 8 horses and 1 goat were rescued from where they were stuck or fell. Firefighters removed even dangerous animals such as snakes from the houses without damage.
The most beautiful part of the rescue operations is the feeling of gratitude that the animals showed at that rescue moment and the feeling that the firefighters have as the animals were saved in a healthy way to return to their natural life.
